Negotiation between Malaysia and the EU on the Malaysia-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade, Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT VPA) started in 2006 with the objective to ensure the export of legal timber to the EU. Underpinning the negotiation is the development of a timber legality assurance system which will ensure the supply and export of only legal timber to the EU. During the development of the TLAS, besides the numerous internal discussions and consultations between the various responsible agencies, several stakeholder consultations and industry briefings were held too.
